CPEC: A New Political, Economic and Strategic Game by Saleem Safi examines the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as both a historic opportunity and a source of deep controversy. Safi traces its roots within China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), highlighting CPEC’s potential to transform Pakistan through energy projects, infrastructure development, and regional connectivity. He underscores its importance not just for economic growth but also for Pakistan’s security and strategic relevance in South Asia.
At the same time, the book delivers a sharp critique of how Pakistani governments have managed the project. Safi argues that secrecy, political favoritism, and diversion of resources—particularly toward Punjab—have undermined national consensus and fueled provincial grievances. Drawing on official records and first-hand reporting, he calls for transparency, equal provincial representation, and a broader vision that includes neglected regions like Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In his view, CPEC can still be a true “game-changer,” but only if leaders set aside short-term political interests for long-term national benefit.
